Mt.Yasumiyama is in Kure City which was a small fishing village before a marine base was built there in 1886. After that Kure prospered as a navy town, and now is known for its heavy industry such as shipbuilding and steel industry. From Kure Station, go east, and enter the Museum street. Along the street, there are a number of museums, including the Irifuneyama Memorial Museum which had been used as a residence of the commander-in-chief until the end of World War‡U. You can then stop by at Kameyama Shrine, and go up the mountain which has three peaks: Yasumiyama, Hisagoyama(419m), and Mitsumineyama(380m). Cross all these peaks, which have superb views. At Hisagoyama where plum trees are in full bloom in mid-Feburary. Go down further on a paved road to the Ondo no Seto Waterway. Above this very busy 70- meter, narrow strait is the Ondo Ohashi Bridge which links Kure and Kurahashi Island.

According to the old legend, this strait was made by Kiyomori Taira (1118`1181) in one day for a shortcut to Miyajima. He was then a great warlord and grand minister of state, and strongly believed in the goddesses of Miyajima.

ŸGetting there

Take a train on Kure Line to Kure. From Kure Station, go east for ten minutes, enter the Museum street, and head for Kameyama Shrine. Go through the shrine, then enter the paved road to the mountainside that leads to Yasumiyama.

To be safe, especially in winter, keep in mind not go into the mountains alone, and be sure to go with a well-experienced hiker.
