Mt. Yasumi is located 2.5 kilometers southeast from JR Kure Station. Kure was a small fishing village before a marine military base was built in 1886. After that Kure prospered as a navy town, and now is known for its heavy industry such as shipbuilding and steel industry.

From Kure Station, go east for ten minutes and enter Museum Street. One of the museums is the Irifuneyama Memorial Museum which had been used as a residence of the commander-in-chief until the end of World WarⅡ.
Then walk north for another 10 minutes to Kameyama Shrine by way of Shimizu 1-chome. After passing the grounds of the shrine cross the wide road and enter the narrow road to the mountainside.
It leads to three peaks: The 497-meter Mt. Yasumi, the 419-meter Mt. Hisago and the 380-meter Mt. Mitsumine where plum trees are in full bloom in mid-February.
Cross all these peaks and go southeast down a paved winding road to the Ondo no Seto Waterway which is a very busy narrow 70-meter-wide strait. No.1 Ondo Ohashi Bridge and new No.2 Ondo Ohashi Bridge, which link Kure and Kurahashi Island, span this strait.

According to the old legend, this channel was made by Kiyomori Taira (1118~1181) in one day for a shortcut to Miyajima. He was then a great warlord and grand minister of state, and strongly believed in the goddesses of Miyajima.

To return to Kure Station take a 20-minute bus ride from Kegoya Middle School near No.2 Ondo Ohashi Bridge.
It is about a 12-kilometer-long hike but rewards you with beautiful views along the way.

Getting there:
Take a train on the Kure Line at Hiroshima Station and get off at Kure Station.
