Map Hikers walk up to the snow-covered Mt. Shinnyu.
Mt. Shinnyu, located just north of Sandankyo Valley, is a part of the Western Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. There is a public hotel called Ikoi-no-mura Hiroshima or Relaxation Village Hiroshima at the foot of the mountain, about 800 meters above sea level. Looking up the dome-shaped mountain from the hotel, it looks almost completely grass-covered, but part of the west side of the mountain is covered with forest.

After parking at the hotel, you can take a 1.5-hour ascent directly to the mountaintop (east entry point), or walk west for about 1.5 kilometers to the south entry point, and enter the forest. It is a relatively long way to the mountaintop, but it is good for enjoying forest bathing.

From the top, you can have a breathtaking panoramic view of ranges of mountains including Mt. Osorakan, Mt. Garyu, and Mt. Hijiri, together with picturesque Lake Hijiri.

Getting there:
Go by car. Travel on the Chugoku Expressway heading west, and get off at the Togouchi exit. Then take Route 191 north for about 16 kilometers. Follow the signboard that reads “深入山” which means Mt. Shinnyu. It will take about 1.5 hours from the central area of Hiroshima City.

Suggested schedule:
Relaxation Village Hiroshima (East entry point, 9:30)---
---South entry point (10:00)---Mt.Shinnyu (12:00-13:00)---
---Relaxation Village Hiroshima (14:30-15:00)===

Note:
To be safe, especially in winter, keep in mind not to go into the mountains alone, and be sure to go with a well-experienced hiker.
