Mt.Shindo is in Nomi Island. Take a 45-minute ferry ride to Nakamachi in Nomi Island from Hiroshima Port. Nomi Island, with its mild climate, is well known for raising flowers, especially chrysanthemums and carnations, and also this island prospers by producing oysters along with other Hiroshima Bay areas. It is believed that the oyster farming in this area dates back to the 16th century, and now Hiroshima Prefecture produces approximately 70 % of oysters eaten in Japan. It is said their quality is the best in the nation. It is because the Ota River carries abundant nutritive substances into Hiroshima Bay, where plankton is fed and grows well. The oysters eat the plankton and end up becoming good oysters. On the forth Sunday's morning in February,
an oyster festival is held in front of Nomi-kaijo
Lodge which is a 10-minute walk east from
Nakamachi port. Hiroshima's delicious oysters
can be tasted. After sampling free oysters,
walk up the 286-meter Shindo Mountain for
about 1.5 hours. From the top, a marvelous
360-degree panoramic view of the Seto Inland
Sea can be seen. ◆Getting there Take a 45 minutes ferry ride for Nakamach
