Map A view of Seto Inland Sea from Mt. Jumonji
Mt. Jumonji is located in the southern part of Toyoshima Island in Toyohama Town which is 12 kilometers southeast from downtown Kure City. The island is now connected to Honshu mainland by bridges including the 903-meter-long Toyoshima-Ohashi Bridge which was opened in 2011. Toyohama and adjoining Yutaka Towns are known for a variety of citrus fruit, especially Ocho-mikan (mandarin) is popular around the nation. The towns also boast the surrounding natural waters where a school of migratory birds from Siberia called "abi" (red-throated divers) come and spend time in winter. The abi is designated as the Hiroshima prefectural bird.

The abi is sacred for fishermen in this area because the birds help them catch sea breams. The birds dive deep trying to catch sand eels which flee to the bottom of the sea and lure sea breams. Sea breams chase the sand eels and end up coming up to the surface of the water. A flock of the birds form a circle to eat sand eels, and at the same time around these birds fishermen can hook sea breams easily. This abi fishing method continued for about 300 years, but decades ago it was suspended because the number of the birds decreased to a level below a hundred from several thousands at the peak time. In 1995 Hiroshima Prefecture decided to restrict these waters as a special preservation district.
