Jakuchikyo Valley, Nishiki Town, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is in the Chugoku Mountains, and famous for its varied beautiful waterfalls. The valley is along the upper reaches of the Jakuchi River, originating in the 1,337-meter Jakuchi mountain which is located in the boundary among three prefectures, Yamaguchi, Shimane, and Hiroshima. The quintupled-stepped Goryunotaki Falls, which amount to 200 meters in total height, are selected as one of the best falls in Japan. The water of the river is also designated as one of the best 100 selections of water in the nation. Thanks to this abundant, clean and cool water, Nishiki Town produces a number of good wasabi, Japanese horse radish, that is used to season Japanese dishes such as sushi, sashimi, soba and so forth. ◆Getting there Take the Nishi-Hiroshima bypass to Miyauchi in Hatsukaichi City, then take Route 186 to Iiyama, passing through Rakan onsen, and enter Route 434 to Usa in Nishiki-cho in Yamaguchi pref.
