Map The name of the mountain, Futatsugajo, implies two mountain castles. The trail to the mountaintop is well-maintained by local residents. Enthusiastic hikers can be seen even on a weekday.
Mt. Futatsugajo is an old mountain castle site. It was said that there were as many as 20 mountain castles in the Koyo area of Asakita Ward in the Middle Ages. The details of this mountain castle are not clear, but it must have been built as a good strategic point by warriors to secure their land against enemies as well as other mountain castles.

One entry point of the mountain is a restaurant named Gusto at Naka-Iwanoue bus stop on Prefectural Road 37. First take a 30-minute walk, crossing the Sanyo Expressway via an overpass, up to the foot of the mountain where a graveyard, Koyo Chuo Reien ( 高陽中央霊園 ), is located. From there you can make an hour ascent up the mountain. It will be relatively cool even in summer, because the mountain trail stretches along streams, and you can walk in the shade of the trees. It may be a bit tough to climb up to the first 331-meter peak where a powerline tower stands, but it would be worth doing so, because breezes will cool your body, and beautiful views will delight your eyes.
Take a short break there, and continue to go up on the rocky ridges of the mountain to the 483-meter summit. From the top of the mountain, you can enjoy a good panoramic view, if weather permits.
Go down the same trail to the overpass. Then walk west along the expressway to a golf driving range, and walk down to Shimo-Iwanoue bus stop which is one stop toward downtown Hiroshima from the starting point.

Getting there:
Take a 35-minute bus ride for Koyo Shako from the No.11 gate of Hiroshima Bus Center, and get off at Naka-Iwanoue bus stop. Buses bound for A Danch, B Danch, C Danch or Naka-Fukawa will stop at Naka-Iwanoue. (However, if you ride an express bus, get off at Shimo-Iwanoue bus stop and walk for five minutes to Gusto).
