Map A gigantic cedar tree on the slope of Mt. Dakeyama
True to a local tradition about Sennen-Sugi (a thousand year old cedar tree), the gigantic tree was discovered on the slope of the 521-meter Dakeyama Mountain in Kuji, Asa Town in 2004. The awesome tree stretches 40 meters into the sky, and the huge trunk, which is divided into seven branches, measures 12 meters in circumference. Actually, it is believed to be 600 to 700 years old.

Local people made a Dakeyama mountain club to take good care of it because they think of it as a precious regional resource. They made a 300-meter trail to get there, linking with two ordinary trails. Both trails lead you to a peak called Noroshidai (signal fire stand site) and the top of Dakeyama which was an old mountain castle site.

Take a bus for Kusunokidai from Hiroshima Bus Center and get off at Sainokami bus stop in Kuji. From there walk parallel to the expressway for 500 meters to the trailhead of the mountain. Then take a 1.5-kilometer trail to the top, visiting the gigantic tree on the way. On the first peak, signal fire stand site, you can have a lunch break, enjoying a fantastic view of Hiroshima City. After reaching the mountaintop, take another 1.2-kilometer trail to go down to the starting point.
