Map | A view of Mt. Aki-no-kofuji from Hiroshima Port. |
Mt. Aki-no-kofuji on Ninoshima Island is just a 20-minute ferry ride from Hiroshima Port. It is a nice place to enjoy, not to mention hiking, bird watching, cycling, shellfish gathering, fishing and so forth. Mt. Aki-no-Kofuji means " Small Fuji" in Aki area (the western part of Hiroshima Prefecture). After getting off at Gakuen-mae Pier, walk right to Ninoshima Gakuen School and go up the ridge of the mountain, and turn right at the junction to the top of Mt. Aki-no-kofuji. It will be a one-hour ascent from Ninoshima Gakuen School. A 360-degree panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea from the mountaintop is beyond description. To descend to Ninoshima Port, go back down the ridge trail, and go straight at the junction, and go down to Ninoshima Port in Yajita. It will take 40 minutes. Getting there: Take a street car No. 5 for Hiroshima Port (via Hijiyama-shita) for 35 minutes. Then take a ferryboat for Ninoshima Port, and get off at Gakuen-mae Pier. Suggested schedule: Hiroshima Port(9:30)==(Ferryboat)==Gakuen-mae Pier(9:50)--- ---Ninoshima Gakuen--(ascent)---Mt. Aki-no-kofuji(11:00-13:00)--(descent)-- ---Ninoshima Port(14:30)===(Ferryboat)==Hiroshima Port(15:10) *Ferry timetables may be subject to change. Note: To be safe, especially in winter, keep in mind not to go into the mountains alone, and be sure to go with a well-experienced hiker. |
