                      第九章 悪

                      Chapter IX  Evil


116.  abhittharetha kalyāṇe

          pāpā cittaṃ nivāraye

          dandhaṃ hi karoto puññaṃ

          pāpasmiṃ ramati mano.


   善は急ぐべきである

   心を悪から守るべきである

   善い事を為すのに遅れがあると

   心は悪を楽しむ。(話148)


             Have a man make haste in doing good

             have him restrain his heart from evil

             for if a man is slow in doing what is good

             his mind delights in evil.



117.  pāpañ ce puriso kayirā

          na taṃ kayirā punappunaṃ

          na tamhi chandaṃ kayirātha

          dukkho pāpassa uccayo.


   人はたとえ悪を為しても

   それを再三再四繰り返してはならない

   それに意を注ぐべきでない

             悪の積み重ねは苦である。(話141)


             Should a man commit evil

             he should not repeat it again and again

             he should not set his mind on it

             suffering is the accumulation of evil.


   

118.  puññnañ ce puriso kayirā

          kayirāth' enaṃ punappunaṃ

          tamhi chandaṃ kayirātha

          sukho puññassa uccayo.


   人はもし善を為すならば

   それを再三再四繰り返すべきである

   それに意を注ぐべきである

   善の積み重ねは楽である。(話141)


             Should a man do what is good

             he should repeat it again and again

             he should set his mind on it

             happiness is the accumulation of good.



119.  pāpo pi passati bhadraṃ

          yāva pāpaṃ na paccati

          yadā ca paccatī pāpaṃ

          atha pāpo pāpāni passati.


   悪人といえども幸いを知ることがある

   悪が熟さない限りは

   悪が熟すその時

   悪人は悪(の報い)を知る。


             Even an evil-doer sees happiness

             so long as his evil deed does not ripen

             but when his evil deed has ripen

             then he sees evil things.

120.  bhadro pi passatī pāpaṃ

          yāva bhadraṃ na paccati

          yadā ca paccatī bhadraṃ

          atha bhadro bhadrāni passati.


   善人といえども悪逆に遭うことがある

   善が熟さない限りは

   善が熟すその時  

   善人は善福に遭う。


             Even a good person sees evil

             so long as his good deed does not ripen

             but when his good deed has ripen

             then he sees good things.



121.  māppamaññetha pāpassa

          na man taṃ āgamissati

          udabindunipātena

          udakumbho pi pūrati

          bālo pūrati pāpassa

          thokathokam pi ācinaṃ.


   悪を軽く見てはならない

   それ(報い)は自分には来ないだろうと

   水滴の落下によって

   水瓶が満ちるように

   愚者は悪で満ちる

   少しずつ積み重ねて (話137)


            One should not think lightly of evil

            (saying) it will not come to me

            Like by the falling of one drop of water after another

            is a water pot filled

            a fool becomes full of evil

            little by little gathering it.



122.  māppamaññetha puññassa

          na man taṃ āgamissati

          udabindunipātena

          udakumbho pi pūrati

          dhīro pūrati puññassa

          thokathokam pi ācinaṃ.


   善を軽く見てはならない

   それ(報い)は自分には来ないだろうと

   水滴の落下によって

   水瓶が満ちるように

   気をつけている人は善で満ちる

   少しずつ積み重ねて


            One should not think lightly of good

            (saying) it will not come to me

123.  vāṇijo va bhayaṃ maggaṃ

          appasattho mahaddhano

          visaṃ jīvitukāmo va

          pāpāni parivajjaye.


   商人が怖れて道を避ける

   少ない隊商と大きな富の故に

   命を欲する者は毒を避ける

   その如く悪を避けよ。


             As a merchant avoids a dangerous path

             possessing small company and great  wealth

             as one desiring to live avoids poison

             should one avoid evil.


   


124.  pāṇimhi ce vaṇo nāssa

          hareyya pāṇinā visaṃ

          nābbaṇaṃ visam anveti

          n' atthi pāpaṃ akubbato.


   もし手に傷がなければ

   手で毒を持ち運ぶ

   傷のない人に毒は従わない

   悪を為さない人に悪は従わない。


            If there be no wound in one's hand

            one may carry poison with the hand

            poison does not affect one who has no wound

            no evil befalls one who does no evil.


   

125.  yo appaduṭṭassa narassa dussati

          suddhassa posassa anaṅgaṇassa

          tam eva bālaṃ pacceti pāpaṃ

          sukhumo rajo paṭivātaṃ va khitto.


   過ち無き人に邪心を抱き

   清く穢れ無き人に(邪心を抱く)

   まことにその愚者に悪は戻る

   風に逆らって投げられた細かい砂のように。


            Whoever does wrong to an innocent person

            to one who is pure and sinless

            unto that very fool return s that evil deed

            like fine dust thrown against the wind.



126.  gabbham eke uppajjanti

          nirayaṃ pāpakammino

          saggaṃ sugatino yanti

          parinibbanti anāsavā.


   ある者は胎内に再生し

   悪を為す者は地獄へ

   善を為す者は天へ行き

   汚れ無き者は般涅槃する。


            Some are reborn into the womb

            evil-doers go to hell

            the good go to heaven

            those free from worldly desires into Nibbāna.

127.  na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe

          na pabbatānaṃ vivaraṃ pavissa

          na vijjatī so jagatippadeso

          yatthaṭṭhito muñceyya pāpakammā.



   空中でも、海中でも

   山々の間に分け入っても

   世界のどこであろうとも

   悪業から逃れられる所はない。


             Neither in the air nor in the midst of the sea

             nor by entering into the clefts of mountains

             Nowhere on earth can the place be found

             where one can escape from the consequences of

                                                                one's evil deeds.



128.  na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe

          na pabbatānaṃ vivaraṃ pavissa

          na vijjatī so jagatippadeso

          yatthaṭṭhitaṃ nappasahetha maccu.


                                  Pāpavaggo navamo


   空中でも、海中でも

   山々の間に分け入っても

   世界のどこであろうとも

   死に圧倒されない所はない。


            悪  第九章


             Neither in the air nor in the midst of the sea

             nor by entering into the clefts of mountains

             Nowhere on earth can the place be found

             where one will not be overwhelmed by death.
