60. dīghā jāgarato ratti

       dīghaṃ santassa yojanaṃ

       dīgho bālānaṃ saṃsāro

       saddhammaṃ avijānataṃ.

Long is the night to the wakeful

long is a league to the weary

long is saṃsāra(the chain of existence)

to the foolish who do not know the True Law.

61. carañ ce nādhigaccheyya

       seyyaṃ sadisamattano

       ekacariyaṃ daḷhaṃ kayirā

       n'atthi bāle sahāyatā.

If on a journey one does not meet

         their better or equal

let them firmly pursue their journey alone

one cannot be friends with a fool.

62. "puttā m'atthi dhanaṃ m'atthi"

       iti bālo vihaññati

       attā hi attano n'atthi

       kuto puttā kuto dhanaṃ.

"Sons have I, wealth have I,"

         thus a fool is tormented

truly he himself is not his own

how then can sons be his, how can wealth be his?

63. yo bālo maññatī bālyaṃ

       paṇḍito vāpi tena so

       bālo ca paṇḍitamānī

       sa ve bālo ti vuccati.

The fool who thinks he is a fool is

for that reason a wise man

the fool who thinks he is wise is

         rightly called a fool.

64. yāvajīvam pi ce bālo

       paṇḍitaṃ payirupāsati

       na so dhammaṃ vijānāti

       dabbī sūparasaṃ yathā.

Even if a fool, all his life long,

        serves a wise man,

he no more perceives the Law

than a spoon the taste of broth.

65. muhuttam api ce viññu

       paṇḍitaṃ payirupāsati

       khippaṃ dhammaṃ vijānāti

       jivhā sūparasaṃ yathā.

While a thoughtful person, even for a moment,

        serves a wise man,

        he swiftly perceives the Law

just as the tongue the taste of broth.

66. caranti bālā dummedhā

       amitteneva attanā

       karontā pāpakaṃ kammaṃ

       yaṃ hoti kaṭukapphalaṃ.

        Fools of little wit behave

with the self as their own enemies

        committing evil deeds

        the fruit whereof is bitter.

67. na taṃ kammaṃ kataṃ sādhu

       yaṃ katvā anutappati

       yassa assumukho rodaṃ

       vipākaṃ paṭisevati.

        Done without rejoice

        done with repent

weeping and with a tearful countenance

        whose reward one receives.

68. tañ ca kammaṃ kataṃ sādhu

       yaṃ katvā nānutappati

       yassa patīto sumano

       vipākaṃ paṭisevati.

        Done with rejoice

        done without repent

        with joy and pleasure

        whose reward one receives.

69. madhuvā maññatī bālo

       yāva pāpaṃ na paccati

       yadā ca paccatī pāpaṃ

       atha bālo dukkhaṃ nigacchati.

As sweet as honey, thinks a fool an evil deed,

so long as it bears no fruit

        but once it ripens

        the fool undergoes much suffering.

70. māse māse kusaggena

       bālo bhuñjetha bhojanaṃ

       na so saṃkhatadhammānaṃ

       kalaṃ nāgghati soḷasiṃ.

Even if month after month with the tip of kusa grass

a fool should eat his food,

he is not worth those who understand the Law

less than a sixteenth part of them.

71. na hi pāpaṃ kataṃ kammaṃ

       sjju khīraṃ va mucchati

       ḍahantam bālam anveti

       bhasmācchanno va pāvako.

         Indeed,an evil deed, when done,

does not become stiff at once, just as milk

         smoldering, it follows the fool

         like fire covered with ashes.

72. yāvad eva anattāya

       ñattaṃ bālassa jāyati

       hanti bālassa sukkaṃsaṃ

       muddham assa vipātayaṃ.

         Utterly useless it is

for a fool to hit on some notions

         they injure his fortune and

         cleave his head.

73. asataṃ bhāvanam iccheyya

       purekkhārañ ca bhikkhusu

       āvāsesu ca issariyaṃ

       pūjā parakulesu ca.

A fool will seek for false reputation

         for precedence among the monks

         for authority in the monasteries

         or honors among other folks.

74. mam' eva kata maññantu

       gihī pabbajitā ubho,

       mam' evātivasā assu

       kiccākiccesu kismici,

       iti bālassa saṃkappo,

       icchā māno ca vaḍḍhati.

That it was I , and I alone, who did this

let both layman and monks think,

let them be subject to my will

in everything that ought to be done

          Thus resolves the fool

so do his desire and pride increase.

75. aññā hi lābhūpanisā

       aññā nibbānagāminī

       evam etaṃ abhiññāya

       bhikkhu Buddhassa sāvako

       sakkāraṃ nābhinandeyya

       vivekam anubrūhaye.

                       Bālavaggo pañcamo

Truly, one road leads to gain

          the other to Nibbāna

          understanding this,

the monk, the disciple of the Buddha

should not delight in the respect of people

but should devote himself to detachment.
