       ujuṃ karoti medhāvī

       usukāro va tejanaṃ.

The wise straighten their trembling, fickle mind

which is difficult to guard and difficult to restrain,

just as a fletcher makes (straight) his arrow.

34. vārijo va thale khitto

       okamokata ubbhato

       pariphandat' idaṃ cittaṃ

       Māradheyyaṃ pahātave.

Like a fish thrown up on dry land

         from its watery home,

         this mind quivers all over

in order to escape the realm of Māra(Death).

35. dunniggahassa lahuno

       yatthakāmanipātino

       cittassa damatho sādhu,

       cittaṃ dantaṃ sukhāvahaṃ.

          Minds are unruly and flighty,,

flit and flutter wherever they list.

       cittaṃ rakkhetha medhāvī,

       cittaṃ guttaṃ sukhāvahaṃ.

Minds are extremely hard to perceive, extremely subtle,

flit and flutter wherever they list.

The wise person should guard them,

       asarīraṃ guhāsayaṃ

       ye cittaṃ saññamessanti

       mokkhanti Mārabandhanā.

          Minds wander afar, wander alone,

are bodiless, lying in a cave.

Those who restrain them will be freed

           from the bond of Māra.

38.  anavaṭṭhitacittassa

        saddhammaṃ avijānato

        pariplavapasādassa

        paññā na paripūrati.

If a man's mind  is unsteady,

if it does not know the true law,

if his purity of confidence is troubled,

         wisdom is not perfected.

39. anavassutacittassa

       ananvāhatacetaso

       puññapāpapahīnassa

         He whose mind is untroubled,

         whose mind is unagitated,

who has ceased to think of good and evil,

for such a vigilant one there is no fear.

40.kumbhūpamaṃ kāyam imaṃ viditvā

        nagarūpamaṃ cittam idaṃ ṭhapetvā

        yodhetha Māraṃ paññāvudhena

        jitañ ca rakkhe anivesano siyā.

Realizing that this body is fragile as a jar,

establishing these minds as firm as a fortress,

one should attack Māra with the weapon of wisdom,

protect what he has conquered and remain unattached to it.

       niratthaṃ va kaliṅgaraṃ.

In no long time this body

         will lie on the earth,

         cast away, with consciousness departed,

         like a useless log.

42. diso disaṃ yan taṃ kayirā

       verī vā pana verinaṃ

       micchāpaṇihitaṃ cittaṃ

       pāpiyo naṃ tato kare.

       aññe vā pi ca ñātakā

Not a mother, not a father will do so much,

          nor will any other relatives,

          a well-directed mind

          can do us far better.
