                        第二十六章 バラモン

                        Chapter XXVI  The Brahman


383.  chinda sotaṃ parakkamma

          kāme panuda brāhmaṇa

          saṃkhārānaṃ khayaṃ ñatvā

          akataññū si brāhmaṇa.


 (渇愛の)流れを努力して断て

 欲愛を除去せよ、バラモンよ。

 諸行の滅を知り

 汝は無為となる、バラモンよ。


    Endeavor to cut off the stream

    drive away desires, Brahman

    Knowing the destruction of all that is made

    you cause nothing, Brahman.



384.  yadā dvayesu dhammesu pāragū hoti brāhmaṇo

          ath' assa sabbe saṃyogā atthaṃ gacchanti jānato.


 バラモンが二種の真理(止と観)について彼岸に到ったとき

 そのとき、この知ある人からすべての結縛は消え去るだろう。


    When the Brahman has reached the other shore in both laws,

    then all the fetters fall away from him that knows well( the laws).




385.  yassa pāraṃ apāraṃ vā

          pārāpāraṃ na vijjati

          vītaddaraṃ visaññuttaṃ

          taṃ ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 彼岸もあるいは此岸も

 また彼此の両岸もなく

 怖れを離れ、結縛を離れた

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one for whom exists neither the far shore nor the near shore

     nor both the far and the near shore,

     the one who is free from fear and free from bonds

     the one I call a Brahman.



386.  jhāyiṃ virajam āsīnaṃ

          katakiccaṃ anāsavaṃ

          uttamatthaṃ anuppattaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 禅定に入り、塵を離れて坐し

 為すべきことを為し、煩悩のない

 最高の道理に達した

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one who is meditative, dwells in seclusion

     the one who has done the duty, and is free from corruptions,

             the one who has reached the supreme goal

     the one I call a Brahman.

387.  divā tapati ādicco

          rattiṃ ābhāti candimā

          sannaddho khattiyo tapati

          jhāyī tapati brāhmaṇo

          atha sabbam ahorattiṃ

          buddho tapati tejasā.


 日中に太陽は輝き

 夜に月は照る

 武装して戦士は輝き

 冥想してバラモンは輝く

 しかし昼となく夜となく

 ブッダはその威光で輝く。


     By day the sun shines

     by night the moon gleams

     in his armor the worrier shines

     in meditating the brahman shines,

     while by day and by night

     the Buddha shines in splendor.



388.  bāhitapāpo ti brāhmaṇo

          samacariyā samaṇo ti vuccati

          pabbājayam attano malaṃ

          tasmā pabbajito ti vuccati.


 悪を除いてバラモンと

 行いを静めて沙門と呼ばれる

 自己の垢穢を除いて

 それゆえ出家と呼ばれる。


     Because he puts away evil,he is called a Brahman

     because he lives in serenity,he is called a samana

     because he gets rid of his impurities

     he is called a recluse.



389.  na brāhmaṇassa pahareyya

          nāssa muñcetha brāhmaṇo

          dhī brāhmaṇassa hantāraṃ

          tato dhī y' assa muñcati.


 バラモンを打ってはならない

 バラモンに(怒りを)放ってはならない

 厭わしきかな、バラモンを殺害する者は

 尚厭わしきは、(害する)彼に(怒りを)放つことである。


 One should not strike at a Brahman

    nor should one fly at a Brahman

    woe to him who slays a Brahman

    and more woe to the Brahman who lets fly at his assailant.

390.  na brāhmaṇass' etad akiñci seyyo

          yadā nisedho manaso piyehi

          yato yato hiṃsamano nivattati

          tato tato sammatimeva dukkhaṃ.


 バラモンにとって少なからず優れたことだ

 心を好ましきものから抑止するのは

 害心を抑えれば抑えるほど

 それにつれて苦は実に静まる。


     It is no slight benefit to a Brahman

     when he restrains his mind from things that are dear to him

     whenever the intent to injure ceases

     even there is cessation of sufferings.



391.  yassa kāyena vācāya

          manasā n' atthi dukkataṃ

          saṃvutaṃ tīhi ṭhānehi

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 その人の身と口と

 意によって悪を為さず

 その三つ(身・口・意)を制御する

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one who, by body, speech

     or mind, does no evil

     the one who is well controlled in these three things

     the one I call a Brahman.



392.  yamhā dhammaṃ vijāneyya sammāsambuddhadesitaṃ

          sakkaccaṃ taṃ namasseyya aggihuttaṃ va brāhmaṇo.


 正等覚者(ブッダ)によって説示された方を了知した人には

 恭敬して礼拝せよ、バラモンが火祠を敬うように。


    Him who has understood the Law preach by the Supremely Enlightened,

    him should one worship reverentially, even as a Brahman reverences

    the sacrificial fire.




393.  na jaṭāhi na gottena

          na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo

          yamhi saccañ ca dhammo ca

          so sukhī so ca brāhmaṇo.


 螺髪によって、氏姓によって

 生まれによってバラモンなのではない

 真理と法をもって

 彼は安楽であり、また彼はバラモンであるのだ。


    Not by matted hair, not by lineage

    not by birth does one become a Brahman

    he in whom the Truth and the Law exist

    he is blessed and he is a Brahman.

394.  kiṃ te jaṭāhi dummedha

          kiṃ te ajinasāṭiyā

          abbhantaran te gahanaṃ

          bāhiraṃ parimajjasi.


 螺髪が汝に何になる、智慧なき者よ

 羚羊の裘が汝に何になる

 汝の内に密林(貪欲)がありながら

 汝は外を磨く。


    What is the use of your matted hair, O fool ?

    what is the use of your antelope skin garment ?

    within you their is a jungle ( of craving) ;

     you polish the exterior.


 

395.  paṃsukūladharaṃ jantuṃ

          kisaṃ dhamanisanthataṃ

          ekaṃ vabasmiṃ jhāyantaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 糞掃衣を着た人

 瘦せて全身に血管が浮き出し

 独り森の中で禅定する

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one who wears refuse-rags

     who is lean with veins standing out

     who meditates alone in the forest

     the one I call a Brahman.



396.  na cāhaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ brūmi

          yonijaṃ mattisambhavaṃ

          bhovādi nāma so hoti

          sa ve hoti sakiñcano

          akiñcanaṃ anādānaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 しかし私はバラモンとは呼ばない

 (バラモンの)子宮から生まれた、(バラモンの)母から生まれただけの者を

 彼は「君よ」と名前を呼ぶ(人に敬意を払わない)者である

 彼は実に何か(取著するもの)を所有する者である

 無所有で無取著の人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


 But I do not call him a Brahman

    because of his origin or of his mother

    such a man arrogantly addresses me

    such a man has worldly possessions

    the one who is free from possessions and attachment

    the one I call a Brahman.

397.  sabbasaṃyojanaṃ chetvā

          yo ve na paritassati

          saṅgātigaṃ visaṃyuttaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 一切の繋縛を断ち切って

 実に怖れることなく

 取著を越え、束縛から離れた

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


 The one who has cut off all the fetters

    who never trembles

    who is beyond every attachment and is free from bond

    the one I call a Brahman.



398.  chetvā nandhiṃ varattañ ca

          sandānaṃ sahanukkamaṃ

          ukkhittapaḷighaṃ buddhaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 紐も、革紐も断ち切り

  綱とその付属物も断ち切り

 (無明の)閂を引き抜いて目覚めた人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one who has cut the strap and the thong

     and the rope with all their appendages

     who has raised the cross-bar and is awakened

     the one I call a Brahman.



399.  akkosaṃ vadhabandhañ ca

          aduṭṭho yo titikkhati

          khantībalaṃ balānīkaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 罵られ、迫害・拘禁されても

 瞋りなく、堪え忍び

 強い忍耐力を協力な軍勢とする

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


    The one who endures reproach, ill-treatment(slaughter) and imprisonment

    who commits no offense and bears them

    whose strength and potent army is patience

    the one I call a Brahman.



400.  akkodhanaṃ vatavantaṃ

          sīlavantaṃ anussutaṃ

          dantaṃ antimasārīraṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 忿りなく、禁戒を保ち

 戒を保ち、貪欲なく

 よく調御し、最後の身体を持つ人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.624)


   The one who is free from anger,who faithfully performs religious duties

      who observes the Precepts, who is free from craving

      who is well-controlled, who wears the last body

      the one I call a Brahman.

401.  vāri pokkharapatte va

          āraggeriva sāsapo

          yo na lippati kāmesu

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 蓮の葉の上の水のように

 また、錐の尖の芥子のように

 諸々の愛欲に汚されない人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.625)


     Like water on the leaf of a lotus

     or like a mustard seed on the point of an awl

     the one who does not cling to sensual pleasures

     the one I call a Brahman.



402.  yo dukkhassa pajānāti idh' eva khayam attano

          pannabhāraṃ visaññuttaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 この世において自分の苦の滅尽を了知し

 重荷を下ろして、捕われのない人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one who realizes here in this world the end of the sufferings

     who has laid aside the burden, who is detached

     the one I call a Brahman.



403.  gambhīrapaññaṃ medhāviṃ

          maggāmaggassa kovidaṃ

          uttamatthaṃ anuppattaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 深い智慧があり、聡明で

 諸々の正道・邪道を熟知し

 最高の目的に到達した人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


    The one whose wisdom is deep, who possesses intelligence

    who discerns the right and wrong way

    who has attained the supreme goal

    the one I call a Brahman.



404.  asaṃsaṭṭhaṃ gahaṭṭhehi anāgārehi c' ūbhayaṃ

          anokasāriṃ appicchaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 在家者とも出家者とも、その両者と交わらず

 家なく遍歴し、欲の少ない人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


      The one who keeps away from both laymen and mendicants

      who wanders about without a home, who has but few wants

      the one I call a Brahman. (= Sn.628)

405. nidhāya daṇḍaṃ bhūtesu tasesu thāvaresu ca

         yo na hanti na ghāteti

         tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


  生き物に、動くものでも動かぬものでも、暴力を捨て

 殺さない、殺させない人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.629)


     The one who lays aside the rod(violence) toward creatures,moving or

                                                                unmoving,

     who neither kills nor causes death

     the one I call a Brahman.



406.  aviruddhaṃ viruddhesu

          attadaṇḍesu nibbutaṃ

          sādānesu anādānaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 害心ある者たちの中で害心なく

 棒を取る者たちの中で心静かに

 取著ある者たちの中で取著ない

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one who is without hostility among those who are hostile

     who is peaceful among those with uplifted staves

     who is unattached among those who are attached

     the one I call a Brahman.



407.  yassa rāgo ca doso ca

          māno makkho ca pāpito sāsaporiva āraggā

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 その貪欲と瞋り

 高慢と偽善を、錐の尖の芥子のように落とした人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.631)


     The one whose passion and hatred,

     pride and hypocrisy have fallen like a mustard seed from the point of an awl

     the one I call a Brahman.



408.  akakkasaṃ viññāpaniṃ

          giraṃ saccaṃ udīraye

          yāya nābhisaje kañci

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 粗暴でなく、よく教え

 真理の言葉を述べ

 誰かを害することのない人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.632)


 The one who is not harsh, instructs the hearers

    who utters true speech

    who,thereby, offends none

    the one I call a Brahman.



409.  yo 'dha dīghaṃ va rassaṃ vā

          aṇuṃthūlaṃ subhāsubhaṃ

          loke adinnaṃ nādiyate

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 この世において、長いものでも短いでも

 微小なものでも、粗大なものでも、浄いものでも、不浄なものでも

 世間において与えられないものを取らない人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.633)


     The one who, here in this world, whether it be long or short,

     fine or coarse, pure or ugly,

     takes nothing that is not given from the society

     the one I call a Brahman.

410.  āsā yassa na vijjanti asmiṃ loke paramhi ca

          nirāsayaṃ visaṃyuttaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 この世でも、かの世でも願望なく

 何にも依存せず、離縛した人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.634)


     The one who has no desires either for this world or for the next

     who is independent, free from fetters

     the one I call a Brahman.



411.  yassālayā na vijjanti

          aññāya akathaṃkathī

          amatogadhaṃ anuppattaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 愛著がなく

 (真理を)了知して、疑いがなく

 不死の境地に深く参入した人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.635)


     The one who has no longings

     who fully understands( the Law) with no doubts

     who has plunged into the Deathless

     the one I call a Brahman.



412.  yo 'dha puññañ ca pāpañ ca ubho saṅgaṃ upaccagā

          asokaṃ virajaṃ suddhaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 この世において善と悪との二つの執着を捨て

 憂いなく汚れを離れて浄い人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.636)


     The one who in this world has escaped from the attachments of

                                                                                      both good and evil

     who is free from grief, is free from defilement, is pure

     the one I call a Brahman.

413.  candaṃ va vimalaṃ suddhaṃ

          vippasannam anāvilaṃ

          nandībhavaparikkhīṇaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 月のように曇りなく清浄で

 澄んで濁りのない

 歓喜と生存の尽きた人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.637)


    The one who like the moon is spotless, pure

    serene and clear

    in whom the essence of joy is extinct

    the one I call a Brahman.



414.  yo imaṃ palipathaṃ duggaṃ saṃsāraṃ moham accagā

          tiṇṇo pāragato jhāyī

          anejo akathaṃkathī anupādāya nibbuto

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 この泥濘の嶮路、輪廻、迷妄を越え去って

 渡って彼岸に到り、禅定あり

 貪欲と疑いと取著なく涅槃に達した人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.638)


     The one who has gone beyond this miry road of rebirth and delusion,

     who has crossed over and reached the other shore,who is meditative,

     free from lust,free from doubt,free from attachment, has attained Nibbāna,

     the one I call a Brahman.



415.  yo 'dha kāme pahatvāna

          anāgāro paribbaje

          kāmābhavaparikkhīṇaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 この世において愛欲を捨て

 出家して遊行し

 愛欲と生存の尽きた人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one who in this world has escaped from sensual desires

     who abandons the house-life and wanders about

     in whom all desires for existence are extinct

     the one I call a Brahman.

416.  yo 'dha taṇhaṃ pahatvāna

          anāgāro paribbaje

          taṇhābhavaparikkhīṇaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 この世において渇愛を捨て

 出家して遊行し

 愛欲と生存の尽きた人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one who in this world has escaped from craving

     who abandons the house-life and wanders about

     in whom all desires for existence are extinct

     the one I call a Brahman.


417.  hitvā mānusakaṃ yogaṃ

          dibbaṃ yogaṃ upaccagā

          sabbayogavisaṃyuttaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 人間の絆を捨て

 神の軛を逃れ

 すべての軛から離縛した人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


    The one who, casting off human ties,

    transcending celestial ties,

    is separated from all attachments

    the one I call a Brahman.



418.  hitvā ratiñ ca aratiñ ca

          sītibhūtaṃ nirūpadhiṃ

          sabbalokābhibhuṃ vīraṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 楽も不楽も捨てて

 清涼となって、依る所なく

 一切世間に打ち勝った勇者

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.642)


     The one who, casting off pleasure and displeasure,

     is cooled and dependent upon nothing

     who has overcome all the worlds, who is brave

     the one I call a Brahman.



419.  cutiṃ yo vedi sattānaṃ

          upapattiñ ca sabbaso

          asattaṃ sugataṃ buddhaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 有情の死を知り

 その再生も遍く(知り)

 執着なく、よく行き、目覚めた人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


 The one who knows the perishing of living things

    and their rebirths utterly,

    who is free from attachment, well-gone,and enlightened

    the one I call a Brahman.



420.  yassa gatiṃ na jānanti devā gandhabbamānusā

          khīṇāsavaṃ arahantaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 神々もガンダルヴァ(伎楽神)も人も行方を知らない

 煩悩を滅ぼし尽くした阿羅漢

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


     The one whose path the gods or gandhabbas oe men do not know

     whose taints are extinct and has attained Arahatship

     the one I call a Brahman.



421.  yassa pure ca pacchā ca

          majjhe ca n' atthi kiñcanaṃ

          akiñcanaṃ anādānaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 その人には、前にも後ろにも

 中間にも何もなく

 無一物で取著のない人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.645)


     The one for whom, before or behind

     or between,there is nothing

     who has nothing and is without attachment

     the one I call a Brahman.



422.  usabhaṃ pavaraṃ vīraṃ

          mahesiṃ vijitāvinaṃ

          anejaṃ nahātakaṃ buddhaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


 牛王のような人、最も優れた人、勇者

 大仙人、打ち勝った人

 貪欲のない人、(汚れを落とした)沐浴者、目覚めた人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。(= Sn.646)


     The one who is fearless like a bull, the noblest, brave

     a great sage, who has overcome( death)

     who is free from craving, who has cleansed himself of defilements,and

   who is enlightened

     the one I call a Brahman.



423.  pubbenivāsaṃ yo vedi

          saggāpāyañ ca passati

          atho jātikkhayaṃ patto

          abhiññāvosito muni

          sabbavositavosānaṃ

          tam ahaṃ brūmi brāhmaṇaṃ.


                   Brāhmaṇavaggo chabbīsatimo


 前世を知り

 天界と苦界を見て

 また生の滅尽に達し

 証智を完成した聖者

 一切の完成すべきことを完成した人

 その人を私はバラモンと呼ぶ。


  バラモン第二十六章


  The one who know his former abodes

     who perceives heaven and hell

     and who has reached the end of birth and rebirth

     who is a sage whose knowledge is perfect

     who has accomplished all that has to be accomplished

     the one I call a Brahman.
