                     第二十五章 比丘

                     Chapter XXV  The Bhikkhu(Mendicant)


360.  cakkhunā saṃvaro sādhu

          sādhu sotena saṃvaro

          ghāṇena saṃvaro sādhu

          sādhu jivhāya saṃvaro.


 目を護るのは善い

 善いことだ耳を護るのは

 鼻を護るのは善い

 善いことだ舌を護るのは。


 Restraint in the eye is good

    good is restraint in the ear

    restraint in the nose is good

    good is restraint in the tongue.



361.  kāyena saṃvaro sādhu

          sādhu vācāya saṃvaro

          manasā saṃvaro sādhu

          sādhu sabbattha saṃvaro

          sabbattha saṃvaro bhikkhu

          sabbadukkhā pamuccati.


 身を護るのは善い

 善いことだ言葉を護るのは

 心を護るのは善い

 善いことだ一切を護るのは

 一切を護る比丘は

 一切の苦から脱する。


    Restraint in the body is good

    good is restraint in speech

    restraint in the mind is good

    good is restraint in all things

    a mendicant(monk) who is restrained in all things

    is freed from all sufferings.



362.  hatthasaññato pādasaññato

          vācāya saññato saññatuttamo

          ajjhattarato samāhito

          eko santusito tam āhu bhikkhuṃ.


 手を慎み、足を慎み

 言葉を慎み、最高に慎み

 内に禅定を楽しみ

 独り満足している、彼を比丘と言う。


    He that controls his hand and his feet

    he that controls his speech and is extremely controlled

    he that delights in meditation

    he that is solitary and contented, he is called a mendicant.



363.  yo mukhasaññato bhikkhu

          mantabhānī anuddhato

          atthaṃ dhammañ ca dīpeti

          madhuraṃ tassa bhāsitaṃ.


 口を慎しむ比丘は

 思慮深く語り、掉挙ならず

 義と理を明らかにする

 彼の言葉は蜜の如く甘美である。


    The mendicant who controls his tongue

    speaks wisely, not puffed up,

    illuminates the meaning and the Law

    as sweet as honey are his words.

364.  dhammārāmo dhammarato

          dhammaṃ anuvicintayaṃ

          dhammaṃ anussaraṃ bhukkhu

          saddhammā na parihāyati.


 法を楽園とし、法を楽しみ

 法を思念し

 法に従って思考する比丘は

 正しい真理から堕落しない。


    He whose garden is the Law, delights in the Law

    he that meditates on the Law

    he that follows the Law, that mendicant

    never falls away from the real Law.



365.  salābhaṃ nātimaññeyya

          nāññesaṃ pihayaṃ care

          aññesaṃ pihayaṃ bhikkhu

          samādhiṃ nādhigacchati.


 自分の得たものを軽蔑するな

 他人の得たものを羨むな

 他人を羨む比丘は

 心の安定に到らない。


     He should not disdain what he has himself attained

     he should not envy others

     a mendicant who envies others

     does not obtain tranquillity.



366.  appalābho pi ce bhikkhu

          salābhaṃ nātimaññati

          taṃ ve devā pasaṃsanti

          suddhājiviṃ atanditaṃ.


 たとえ得たものが少なくとも、比丘が

 自分の得たものを軽蔑しないならば

 神々すらも彼を賞讃する

 清い生活をし、倦怠ないと。


     Though a mendicant receives only little,

     if he does not disdain what he has himself attained,

     even the gods praise him

     as of pure and strenuous livelihood.


 

367.  sabbaso nāmarūpasmiṃ

          yassa n' atthi mamāyitaṃ

          asatā ca na socati

          sa ve bhikkhū ti vuccati.


 一切の名色に対して

 我執がなく

 無所有を愁えることもない

 彼こそ比丘と呼ばれる。


     To whatever Name and Form

     no attachment he has

     he does not grieve from having nothing

     such a man is truly called a mendicant.

368.  mettāvihārī yo bhikkhu

          pasanno buddhasāsane

          adhigacche padaṃ santaṃ

          saṃkhārūpasamaṃ sukhaṃ.


 慈しみに住する比丘は

 ブッダの教えを浄信し

 寂静の境地に到る

 一切の現象が静まり、安楽な(境地へ)。(話129)


    The mendicant who lives in friendliness

     who is devoted to the doctrine of the Buddha

     he will attain the tranquil place

     where bodily existence is happily at rest.



369.  siñca bhikkhu imaṃ nāvaṃ

          sittā te lahum essati

          chetvā rāgañ ca dosañ ca

          tato nibbānam ehisi.


 比丘よ、この舟から水を汲み出せ

 汲み出せば、軽やかに進むだろう

 貪欲と瞋恚を断ち切れば

 涅槃に赴くであろう。


     Bail out, mendicant, this boat

     when bailed out, it will go lightly

             having cut off lust and hatred

     then you will go to Nibbāna.



370.  pañca chinde pañca jahe

          pañca vuttaribhāvaye

          pañcasaṅgātigo bhikkhu

          oghatiṇṇo ti vuccati.


 五(下分結)を断て、五(上分結)を捨てよ

 五(根)を修習せよ

 五つの執着を越えた比丘は

 暴流を越えた人と言われる。


    Cut off the five, get rid of the five

    master the five

    a mendicant who has freed himself of the five fetters

    is called one who has crossed the flood.



371.  jhāya bhikkhu mā ca pāmado

          mā te kāmaguṇe bhamassu cittaṃ

          mā lohaguḷaṃ gilī pamatto

          mā kandī dukkham idan ti ḍayhamāno.


 冥想せよ、比丘、放逸なることなかれ

 愛欲に心楽しませるなかれr

 放逸にして鐵丸を嚥むなかれ

 焼かれながら、これは苦だと泣き叫ぶなかれ。


     Meditate, mendicant, be not heedless

     let not your mind delight in sensual pleasures

     lest you swallow an iron ball as a punishment for your heedlessness

     lest you cry as you burn," This is indeed suffering."

372.  n' atthi jhānaṃ apaññassa

          paññā n' atthi ajhāyato

          yamhi jhānañ ca paññā ca

          sa ve nibbānasantike.


 智慧のない者に禅定はない

 禅定のない者に智慧はない

 禅定と智慧のある

 彼は涅槃に近づいている。(話176)


    There is no meditation for one who has no wisdom

    there is no wisdom for one without meditation

    he in whom there are meditation and wisdom

    he indeed is close to Nibbāna.



373.  suññāgāraṃ paviṭṭhassa

          santacittassa bhikkhuno

          amānusī ratī hoti

          sammā dhammaṃ vipassato.


 空き家に入り

 心を静める比丘は

 人ならぬ楽がある

 正しく法を観想して。


    A mendicant who enters an empty house

    with tranquil heart

    he has a mow than human delight

    through his right contemplation on the Law.



374.  yato yato sammasati khandhānaṃ udayavyayaṃ

          labhaī pītipāmojjaṃ amataṃ taṃ vijānataṃ.


 五蘊の生滅を思惟するに従って

 不死を了知して喜悦を得る。


     Whenever he comprehends the rise and set of the aggregates of being

     he obtains the happiness and joy of those who comprehend the deathless.



375.  tatrāyam ādi bhavati

          idha paññassa bhikkhuno

          indriyaguttī santuṭṭhī

          pātimokkhe ca saṃvaro

          mitte bhajassu kalyāṇe

          suddhājīve atandite.


 これが最初の入り口である

 この世で智慧ある比丘の

 五根を守り知足し

 戒律においてよく身を護り

 善き朋友に親近せよ

 清い生活に懈怠なき。


     This is the beginning

     here to a wise mendicant,

     control of the senses, self-contentment

     restraint under the Law

     associate with friend who are noble

     whose lives are pure, who are strenuous.

376.  paṭisanthāravutt' assa

          ācārakusalo siyā

          tato pāmojjabahulo

          dukkhass' antaṃ karissati.


 振る舞いにおいて親しみやすく

 行為において巧みであれ

 そうすれば喜悦にあふれ

 苦の滅を為すであろう。


     One should be cordial in manner

     one should be considerate in conduct

     then one will experience profound joy

     and make an end of sufferings.



377.  vassikā viya pupphāni maddavāni pamuñcati

          evaṃ rāgañ ca dosañ ca vippamuñcetha bhikkhavo.


 ジャスミンの花が萎れた花を捨て落とすように

 そのように貪欲と瞋恚を捨て去れ、比丘たちよ。(話36)


     Even as the jasmine sheds its withered flowers,

     even so, mendicants, you should shed lust and hatred.



378.  santakāyo santavāco

          santavā susamāhito

          vantalokāmiso bhikkhu

          upasanto ti vuccati.


 身を静め、言葉を静め

 寂静にして心を集中し

 世の富を吐き出した比丘は

 実に安らぎに達した者と言われる。


 A mendicant who has a calmed body, a calmed speech,

    and a calmed mind, who is well-established,

    who has given up worldly things

    the mendicant is truly said to be a peaceful one.



379.  attanā coday' attānaṃ

          paṭimāse attam attanā

          so attagutto satimā

          sukhaṃ bhikkhu vihāhisi.


 自ら自身を鼓舞せよ

 自身で自らを熟慮せよ

 自己を護り、念を保てば

 比丘よ、汝は安楽に住するであろう。


    Rouse yourself by yourself

    examine yourself by yourself

    thus guarded yourself and mindful

    mendicant, you will live in happiness.

380.  attā hi attano nātho

          attā hi attano gati

          tasmā saññāmay' attānaṃ

          assaṃ bhadraṃ va vāṇijo.


 自己は実に自分の主である

 自己は実に自分の拠り所である

 それゆえに自己を制御せよ

 商人が良馬を(制御)するように。


 Self is indeed the lord of self

    self is the refuge of self

    therefore curb your own self

    even as a merchant curbs a fine horse.



381.  pāmojjabahulo bhikkhu

          pasanno buddhsāsane

          adhigacche padaṃ santaṃ

          saṃkhārūpasamaṃ sukhaṃ.


 喜悦に満ちた比丘は

 ブッダの教えを浄信し

 寂静の境地に到る

 一切の現象が静まり、安楽な(境地へ)。


     The mendicant full of delight

     who is devoted to the doctrine of the Buddha

     he will attain the tranquil place

     where bodily existence is happily at rest.



382.  yo have daharo bhikkhu

          yuñjati buddhasāsane

          so 'maṃ lokaṃ pabhāseti

          abbhā mutto va candimā.


                     Bhikkhuvaggo pañcavīsatimo


 たとえ年若い比丘でも

 ブッダの教えに勤しむと

 彼はこの世を輝かす

 雲を離れた月のように。


   比丘  第二十五章


 The mendicant who,while still young,

    devotes himself to the doctrine of the Buddha,

    he illuminates this world

    like the moon freed from a cloud.
