                             20. Maggavagga

                   Chapter XX  The Path

273.  maggān' aṭṭhaṅgiko seṭṭho

          saccānaṃ caturo padā

          virāgo seṭṭho dhammānaṃ

          dipadānañ ca cakkhumā.

Of paths the Eightfold Path is the best

of truths the Four Noble Truths

freedom from craving is the best of states

and of men(two-footed beings) the All-Seeing(Buddha).

274.  es' eva maggo n' atth' añño

          dassanassa visuddhiyā

          etaṃ hi tumhe paṭipajjatha

          mārassa' etaṃ pamohanaṃ.

        There is none other path

that leads to the purifying of insight

     do enter upon this Path

     this will confuse Māra.

275.  etaṃ hi tumhe paṭipannā

          dukkhass' antaṃ karissatha

          akkhāto ve mayā maggo

          aññāya sallasanthanaṃ.

    Do enter upon this Path

you will make an end of sufferings

this is the Path that I preached

when I learned perfectly to remove the arrow of lusts.

276.  tumhehi kiccaṃ ātappaṃ

          akkhātāro tathāgatā

          paṭipannā pamokkhanti

          jhāyino mārabandhanā.

            You yourselves strive

    the Buddhas are only preachers

those that enter upon this Path are released,

those that practise meditation, from the bondage of Māra.

277.  "sabbe saṅkhārā aniccā" ti

           yadā paññāya passati

           atha nibbindatī dukkhe

           esa maggo visuddhiyā.

" All conditioned phenomena are impermanent"

when one sees this with wisdom

   one becomes contemptuous of sufferings

this is the Path to Purity.

278.  "sabbe saṅkhārā dukkhā" ti

          yadā paññāya passati

          atha nibbindatī dukkhe

when one sees this with wisdom

    one becomes contemptuous of sufferings

this is the Path to Purity.

279.  "sabbe dhammā anattā" ti

          yadā paññāya passati

          atha nibbindatī dukkhe

          esa maggo visuddhiyā.

     "All phenomena are without Self"

when one sees this with wisdom

      one becomes contemptuous of sufferings

this is the Path to Purity.

280.  uṭṭhānakālamhi anuṭṭhahāno

          yuvā balī ālasiyaṃ upeto

          saṃsannasaṃkappamano kusīto

          paññāya maggaṃ alaso na vindati.

He that does not rise when it is time to get up,

though young and strong, is full of sloth,

that is weak in resolution and thought,

that is lazy and idle, will not find the Path by wisdom.

PTS page 79

281.   vācānurakkhī manasā susaṃvuto

           kāyena ca akusalaṃ na kayirā

           ete tayo kammapathe visodhaye

           ārādhaye maggam isippaveditaṃ.

Guarding in word, restraining well in thought,

with the body one should do no wrong

making clear these three paths of action

one should achieve the way taught by the sages.

282.  yogā ve jāyati bhūrī

          ayogā bhūrisaṃkhayo

          etaṃ dvedhāpathaṃ nātvā

          bhavāya vibhavāya ca

          tath' attānaṃ niveseyya

          yathā bhūrī pavaḍḍhati.

    From mediation wisdom is born

    without meditation wisdom is lost

    knowing this twofold path

    of gain and loss

    one should settle oneself

    so that wisdom may increase.

283.   vanaṃ chindatha mā rukkhaṃ

           vanato jāyatī bhayaṃ

           chetvā vanaṃ vanathañ ca

           nibbanā hotha bhikkhavo.

Cut down the forest, not alone a single tree

    from the forest springs fear

cut down the forest of lusts and its undergrowth

    be free from lusts, monks.

284.  yāvaṃ hi vanatho na chijjati

          aṇumatto pi narassa nārisu

          paṭibaddhamano va tāva so

          vaccho khīrapako va mātari.

As long as the desire is not cut down

however slight (the desire)of a man for women

so long is his mind in bondage

as a sucking calf is (bound) to its mother.

285.  ucchinda sineham attano

          kumudaṃ sāradikaṃ va pāṇinā

          santimaggam eva brūhaya

          nibbānaṃ sugatena desitaṃ.

Cut off the attachment for yourself

as you would an autumnal lotus with the hand

    cultivate the Path to Tranquillity

the way to Nibbāna pointed out by the Happy One(Buddha).

286.  idha vassaṃ vasissāmi

          idha hemantagimhisu

          iti bālo vicinteti

          antarāyaṃ na bujjhati.

Here shall I dwell during the rainy season

    here during winter and summer

    thus the fool gets worried

without realizing the obstacle(to the Path to Nibbāna).

PTS page 81

           byāsattamanasaṃ naraṃ

One who is distracted with children and cattle

whose mind is attached with the worldly possession

as a raging torrent sweeps away a sleeping village

the Death carries the one away.

288.  na santi puttā tāṇāya

          na pitā na pi bandhavā

          antakenādhipannassa

          n' atti ñātīsu tāṇatā.

    Children are no refuge

    nor a father, nor relatives

for one who is seized by the Death

there is no refuge in kinsfolk.

289.  tam atthavasaṃ ñatvā

          paṇḍito sīlasaṃvuto

          nibbānagamanaṃ maggaṃ

          khippam eva visodhaye.

                       Maggavaggo vīsatimo

     Realizing the significance of this

the wise one restrained by the moral law

     the path leading to Nibbāna

     should even quickly clear.
