                              19. Dhammaṭṭhavagga

                    Chapter XIX  The Righteous

256.  na tena hoti dhammaṭṭho

          yen' atthaṃ sahasā naye

          yo ca atthaṃ anatthañ ca

          ubho niccheyya paṇḍito.

Not therefore is a man righteous

because he decides a cause arbitrarily

he that into both right and wrong

            inquires is wise.

257.  asāhasena dhammena

          samena nayatī pare

          dhammassa gutto medhāvī

          dhammaṭṭho ti pavuccati.

            Not arbitrarily and justly

            he that leads others equitably

he that is protected of the Law, intelligent

            he is called righteous.

258.  na tena paṇḍito hoti

          yāvatā bahu bhāsati

          khemī averī abhayo

          paṇḍito ti pavuccati.

Not therefore is a man wise

             for his much speaking

he that is tranquil, free from hatred and fear

             he is called wise.

259.  na tāvatā dhammadharo

          yāvatā bahu bhāsati

          yo ca appam pi sutvāna

          dhammaṃ kāyena passati

          sa ve dhammadharo hoti

          yo dhammaṃ nappamajjati.

Not therefore is a man versed in the Law

             for his much speaking

he that hears only a little

discerns the Law by his body(acts)

he is indeed versed in the Law

he never deviates from the Law.

260.  na tena thero so hoti

          yen' assa phalitaṃ siro

          paripakko vayo tassa

          moghajiṇṇo ti vuccati.

Not therefore is a man an Elder

            because his head is grey

he that is ripe only in years

he is called grown old in vain.

261.  yamhi saccañ ca dhammo ca

          ahiṃsā saṃyamo damo

          sa ve vantamalo dhīro

          thero ti pavuccati.

He in whom dwell Truth, righteousness,

             non-injury, restraint, self-control

he that is free from impurities, and is wise

he is indeed called an Elder.

262.  na vākkaraṇamattena

          vaṇṇapokkharatāya vā

          sādhurūpo naro hoti

          issukī maccharī saṭho.

Not through a bit of eloquence

or beauty of complexion like lotuses

is a man of good disposition

he that is envious, greedy, and wicked.

263.  yassa c' etaṃ samucchinnaṃ

          mūlaghaccaṃ samūhataṃ

          sa vantadoso medhāvī

          sādhurūpo ti vuccati.

But in whom these are destroyed

            uprooted and removed

he that  is free from hatred and is wise

he is indeed called a man of good disposition.

264.  na muṇḍakena samaṇo

          abbato alikaṃ bhaṇaṃ

          icchālobhasamāpanno

          samaṇo kiṃ bhavissati.

Not by tonsure does a man become a monk

he that is undisciplined and speaks falsehood

he that is affected with desire and cupidity

how can he be a monk ?

265.  yo ca sometí pāpāni

          aṇuṃthūlāni sabbaso

          samitattā hi pāpānaṃ

          samaṇo ti pavuccati.

But he that quiets the evil tendencies

small or large, wholly and entirely

because he has quieted all evil

he is indeed called a monk.

266.  na tena bhikkhu hoti

          yāvatā bhikkhate pare

          vissaṃ dhammaṃ samādāya

          bhikkhu hoti na tāvatā.

Not therefore is a man a bhikkhu

because he begs others for alms

he that accepts a worldly life

he is not a bhikkhu on that account.

267.   yo' dha puñañ ca pāpañ ca

           bāhetvā brahmacariyavā

           saṃkhāya loke carati

           sa ve bhikkhū ti vuccati.

He that in this world both merit and demerit

casts out, lives a sacred life

comports himself cautiously with the world

he is indeed called a bhikkhu.

268.  na monena munī hoti

          mūḷharūpo aviddasu

          yo ca tulaṃ va paggayha

          varam ādāya paṇḍito.

Not because of silence is a man a sage

he that is dull and ignorant

as if he were holding the scale

a wise man takes what is good.

269.  pāpāni parivajjeti

          sa munī tena so muni

          yo munāti ubho loke

          munī tena pavuccati.

            He that avoids evil things

he is a sage, for that reason, a sage

he that in this world weighs both sides

            is indeed called a sage.

270.  na tena ariyo hoti

          yena pāṇāni hiṃsati

          ahiṃsā sabbapāṇānaṃ

          ariyo ti pavuccati.

Not therefore is a man Sacred

            by injuring living creatures

he that does not injure all living beings

    he is indeed called Sacred.

271.  na sīlabbatamattena

          bāhusaccena vā puna

          atha vā samādhilābhena

          viviccasayanena vā.

            Not only by religious practices

            not only by much learning

nor moreover by attaining tranquillity

nor by sleeping solitary and remote

272.  phusāmi nekkhammasukhaṃ

          aputhujjanasevitaṃ

          bhikkhu vissaāsa māpādi

          appatto āsavakkhayaṃ.

                        Dhammaṭṭhavaggo ekūnavīsatimo.

I reach the happiness of release

that no worldling can attain

            bikkhu, rest not content

until you have reached the extinction of impurities.
