Make for yourself an island(a refuge)

            strive hastily and become wise

            should remove their own impurities.

240.  ayasā va malaṃ samuṭṭhitaṃ

          taduṭṭhāya tam eva khādati

          sakakammāni nayanti duggatiṃ.

Even as rust formed from iron

corrodes the iron from which it is formed,

likewise in the case of transgressors

their own evil deeds bring them to an evil end.

miserliness is the taint of a benefactor

            evil deeds are taints

243.  tato malā malataraṃ

          avijjā paramaṃ malaṃ

          etaṃ malaṃ pahatvāna

            But worse than these taints

            the worst is ignorance

            having cast away this taint,

           monks, be taintless.

244.  sujīvaṃ ahirīkena

          kākasūrena dhaṃsinā

          pakkhandinā pagabbhena

          saṃkikiṭṭhena jīvitaṃ.

Life is easy to live for those who are shameless

bold  and impudent like a crow

for those who are aggressive and insolent

it is easy to live in this world.

245.  hirīmatā ca dujjīvaṃ

          niccaṃ sucigavesinā

But life is hard to live for those who have

                                                              a sense of honor

for those who always seek for purity

who are free from attachment and modest

who live pure lives and who are insightful( into Truth).

He who drinks liquor or wine

he who is addicted to these deeds

such a man, even in this world,

            digs up his own root.

248.  evaṃ bho purisa jānāhi

          pāpadhammā asaññatā

          mā taṃ lobho adhammo ca

          ciraṃ dukkhāya randhayuṃ.

            Know this, O man, that

            not restraining oneself is evil

            Let not greed and wrong-doing

subject you to suffering so long.

249.  dadāti ve yathāsaddhaṃ

          yathāpasādanaṃ jano

          tattha yo maṅku bhavati

          paresaṃ pānabhojane

na so divā vā rattiṃ vā

          samādhiṃ adhigacchati.

People give according to their faith

people give according to their pleasure

whoever allows himself to be annoyed

because food and drink are given to others

such a man, either by day or by night,

            will not attain tranquillity.

250.  yassa c' etaṃ samucchinnaṃ

          mūlaghaccaṃ samūhataṃ

          samādhiṃ adhigacchati.

But if a man exterminates the discontent

and tears it out by the roots,  utterly destroys it

such a man, either by day or by night

            will attain tranquillity.

          n' atthi dosasamo gaho

          n' atthi mohasamaṃ jālaṃ

          n' atthi taṇhāsamā nadī.

There is no fire like lusts

there is no capturer like hatred

there is no snare like delusion

there is no river like craving.

252.  sudassaṃ vajjam aññesaṃ

          attano pana duddasaṃ

          paresaṃ hi so vajjāni

          opunāti yathā bhusaṃ

          attano pana chādeti

          kaliṃ va kitavā saṭho.

The fault of others is easily seen,

while our own is difficult to see

            a man indeed  others' faults

            winnows like chaff,

while he hides his own faults

even as a sly gambler covers a losing throw.

253.  paravajjānupassissa

          niccaṃ ujjhānasaññino

          āsavā tassa vaḍḍhanti

          ārā so āsavakkhayā.

In one who sees the faults of others,

who is always dissatisfied with them

            impurities increase within him

he is far from the destruction of the impurities.

254.  ākāse ca padaṃ n' atthi

          samaṇo n' atthi bāhiro

          papañcābhiratā pajā

          nippapañcā tathāgatā.

There is no footstep in the air

there is no recluse outside the Buddha's Teaching

people in this world delight in gossiping

the Buddhas are far from gossiping.

255.  ākāse ca padaṃ n' atthi

          samaṇo n' atthi bāhiro

PTS page 72

          saṅkhārā sassatā n' atthi

          n' atthi buddhānam iñjitaṃ.

                          Malavaggo aṭṭhārasamo

There is no footstep in the air

there is no recluse outside the Buddha's Teaching

there is nothing eternal in the phenomenal world

there is no instability to the Buddhas.
