                                 17. Kodhavagga

                       Chapter XVII   Anger

221.  kodhaṃ jahe vippajaheyya mānaṃ

          saññojanaṃ sabbam atikkameyya

          taṃ nāmarūpasmim asajjamānaṃ

          akiñcanaṃ nānupatanti dukkhā.

One should put away anger, one should

                                                                  renounce conceit

            one should overcome every attachment

to one who does not cling to phenomenal existence

            befall no sufferings.

222.  yo ve uppatitaṃ kodhaṃ

          rathaṃ bhantaṃ va dhāraye

          tam ahaṃ sārathiṃ brūmi

          rasmiggāho itaro jano.

             The rising anger

one who controls it like a chariot gone astray

I call the one a real charioteer

other folk are merely holders of reins.

223.  akkodhena jine kodhaṃ

          asādhuṃ sādhunā jine

          jine kadariyaṃ dānena

          saccenālikavādinaṃ.

One should overcome anger by non-anger

one should overcome evil by good

one should overcome the miser by gifts

the speaker of falsehood by Truth.

224.  saccaṃ bhaṇe na kujjheyya

          dajjā appasmi yācito

          etehi tīhi ṭhānehi

          gacche devāna santike.

One should speak the Truth, should not get angry,

should give when asked if it is only a little

            by these three acts

one will come into the presence of the gods.

225.  ahiṃsakā ye munayo

          niccaṃ kāyena saṃvutā

          te yanti accutaṃṭhānaṃ

          yattha gantvā na socare.

             The sages who injure none

              always control their bodies,

              go to the deadness Nibbāna,

where, having gone, they do not grieve.

226.  sadā jāgaramānānaṃ

          ahorattānusikkhinaṃ

          nibbānaṃ adhimuttānaṃ

          atthaṃ gacchanti āsavā.

            Those who are ever wakeful

who study by day and by night

            who strive after Nibbāna

their taints come to an end.

227.  porāṇam etaṃ Atula

          n' etaṃ ajjatanām iva

          nindanti tuṇhiṃ āsīnaṃ

          nindanti bahubhāṇinaṃ

          mitabhāṇinam pi nindanti

          n' atthi loke anindito.

This is an old saying, Atula !

it is no mere saying of today

they blame one who remains silent

they blame one who talks much

they also blame one who speaks in moderation

there is no one in the world who is not blamed.

There never was, nor will be

nor is there now to be found

            anyone who is wholly blamed

            anyone who is wholly praised.

229.  yaṃ ce viññū pasaṃsanti

          anuvicca suve suve

          acchiddavuttiṃ medhāviṃ

          paññāsīlasamāhitaṃ.

230.  nekkhaṃ jambonadasseva

          ko taṃ ninditum arahati

          devā pi naṃ pasaṃsanti

          brahmunā pi pasaṃsito.

            If the wise praise,

            discriminating day after day,

one to be living a faultless life, sensible,

            learned, virtuous, and composed

him who is like a gold coin from the Jambu river

who would venture to blame, the sage

            even the gods praise him

even by Brahmā he is praised.

231.  kāyappakopaṃ rakkheyya

          kāyena saṃvuto siyā

            The wise control their bodies

            and then control their speech

            the wise control their minds

            indeed they control perfectly(themselves).
