                           12. Attavagga

                   Chapter XII  Self

157.  attānañ ce piyaṃ jaññā

          rakkheyya naṃ surakkhitaṃ

          tiṇṇaṃ aññataraṃ yāmaṃ

          paṭijaggeyya paṇḍito.

            If one holds oneself dear

one should guard it and guard it well

during one of the three watches(of life)

should a wise person be awake(control oneself).

158.  attānam eva paṭhamaṃ

          patirūpe nivesaye

          ath' aññam anusāseyya

          na kilisseyya paṇḍito.

             Oneself should one first

             establish properly

only then should one instruct others

Thus the wise person will not be reproached.

159.  attānañ ce tathā kayirā

          yath' aññam anusāsati

          sudanto vata dametha

          attā hi kira duddamo.

            One should do

as one teaches others to do

only well-controlled one may subdue others

the self is indeed difficult to subdue.

160.  attā hi attano nātho

          ko hi nātho paro siyā

          attanā hi sudantena

          nāthaṃ labhati dullabhaṃ

The self is the guardian of self

who else could be the guardian ?

             with self well-controlled

one finds a guardian who is difficult to obtain.

161.  attanā va kataṃ pāpaṃ

          attajaṃ attasambhavaṃ

PTS page 46

          abhimatthati dummedhaṃ

          vajiraṃ v' amhamayaṃ maṇiṃ.

            The evil done by oneself

born of oneself, produced by oneself

            crushes the fool

as a diamond breaks another hard gem.

162.  yassa accantadussīlyaṃ

          māluvā sālamivotthataṃ

          karoti so tath' attānaṃ

          yathā naṃ icchatī diso.

He whose wickedness has passed all bounds,

as a creeper overspreads a sale tree,

            makes himself that

which his enemy would wish him to be.

163.  sukarāni asādhūni

          attano ahítāni ca

yaṃ ve hitañ ca sādhuñ ca

          taṃ ve paramadukkaraṃ.

Evil deeds are easy to do

so are deeds which are harmful to oneself

            what is beneficial and good,indeed,

that is extremely difficult to do.

164.  yo sāsanaṃ arahataṃ

          ariyānaṃ dhammajīvinaṃ

          paṭikkosati dummedho

          diṭṭhiṃ nissāya pāpikaṃ

          phalāni kaṭṭhakasseva

          attaghaññāya phallati.

             The teaching of the saintly

who live according to the Dhamma,

             the foolish man scorns

             due to his false view

             like a bamboo(kaṭṭhaka)bears fruit

             for its own destruction.

165.  attanā va kataṃ pāpaṃ

          attanā saṃkilissati

          attanā akataṃ pāpaṃ

          attanā va visujjhati

          suddhī asuddhī paccattaṃ

          nāñño aññaṃ visodhaye.

By oneself alone is evil done

            by oneself is one defiled

            by oneself is evil undone

by oneself alone is one purified

purity and impurity belong to oneself

            no one purifies another.

166.  attadatthaṃ paratthena

          bahunāpi na hāpaye

          attadattham abhiññāya

          sadatthapasuto siyā.

                         Attavaggo dvādasamo

For the good of another, his own task

should no one neglect however great(another's is)

after one has discerned one's own task

one should make every effort to attain Nibbāna.
