                      第十一章 老い

                      Chapter XI   Old Age


146.  ko nu hāso kim ānando

          niccaṃ pajjalite sati

          andhakārena onaddhā

          padīpaṃ na gavesatha.


   何を笑う、どうして喜ぶ

   絶えず燃えているときに

   暗闇に覆われて

   灯明を求めないのか。(悟154)


            Why laughter, why exultation

            while the world is ever aflame

            shrouded in darkness

            will you not seek a light ?



147.  passa cittakataṃ bimbaṃ

          arukāyaṃ samussitaṃ

          āturaṃ bahusaṅkappaṃ

          yassa n' atthi dhuvaṃ ṭhiti.


   様々に粉飾された身体を見よ

   傷だらけで寄せ集め

   病に悩み、思いばかり多く

   いつまでも留まることなどないものを。


             See this painted image

             full of wounds, huddled together

             diseased, yet with many thoughts

             where there is neither permanence nor stability.



148.  parijiṇṇaṃ idaṃ rūpaṃ

          roganiḍḍaṃ pabhaṅguraṃ

          bhijjati pūtisandeho

          maraṇantaṃ hi jīvitaṃ.


   この体は衰え果て

   病の巣であり壊れ行く

   腐敗の塊であり崩れ行く

   生は死で終わるもの。(話113)


            This body is worn out

             a nest of diseases and very frail

             this heap of corruption dissolves

             life indeed ends in death.



149.  yān' imāni apatthāni

          alābūn' eva sārade

          kāpotakāni aṭṭhīni

          tāni disvāna kā rati.


   この投げ捨てられた

   秋の瓢簞のような

   鳩色の骨

   それを見て何の喜びがあろうか。


             Like cast away

             yonder gourds in autumn

             are these gray bins

             what pleasure can there be looking at them ?

150.  aṭṭhīnaṃ nagaraṃ kataṃ

          maṃsalohitalepanaṃ

          yattha jarā ca maccu ca

          māno makkho ca ohito.


   骨で城は作られ

   肉と血が塗られ

   そこは老いと死と

   高慢と偽善で覆われている。


             Of the bones a citadel is made

             plastered with flesh and blood

             there old age and death,

             pride and deceit dwell.



151.  jīranti ve rājarathā sucttā

          atho sarīram pi jaraṃ upeti

          satañ ca dhammo na jaraṃ upeti

          santo have sabbhi pavedayanti.


   実に、様々な王の車も朽ち果てる

   また身体も老いに近づく

   しかし善き人々(聖者)の真理は老いない

   実に、聖者は善き人々に正しく説く。(悟194)


             The splendid chariots of kings wear out

             likewise does the body come to old age

             but the Law of the good does not come to old age

             the good, indeed, proclaim the Law to the good.



152.  appassutāyaṃ puriso

          balivaddo va jīrati

          maṃsāni tassa vaḍḍhanti

          paññā tassa na vaḍḍhati.


   学ぶことの少ない人は

   牛のように老いる

   その肉は増えるが

   智慧はふえない。(悟108)


            The man of little learning

            grows old like an ox

            his flesh increases

            while his wisdom does not increase.



153.  anekajātisaṃsāraṃ

          sandhāvissaṃ anibbisaṃ

          gahakārakaṃ gavesanto

          dukkhā jāti punappunaṃ.


     幾多の生死輪廻を

   流転しても見出さなかった

   家(我)を作るもの(妄執)を探して

   幾度もの生まれは苦である。


             Through a round of countless births

             have I run without finding

             looking for the builder of this house

             painful is birth again and again.

154.  gahakāraka diṭṭho si

          puna gehaṃ na kāhasi

          sabbā te phāsukā bhaggā

          gahakūṭaṃ visaṅkhitaṃ

          visaṅkhāragataṃ cittaṃ

          taṇhānaṃ khayam ajjhagā.


   家を作るものよ、お前は見つけられた

   もう二度と家を作ることはないだろう

   これらすべての垂木は壊れ

   家の屋根は頽れた

   心は形成作用を離れ(もう何も妄想せず)

   渇愛は尽滅に達した。


            Builder of the house, now you are seen

            you will not build this house again

            all the rafters are broken

            the ridgepole is shuttered

            The mind, at rest in Nibbāna,

            has attained extinction of cravings.



155.  acaritvā brahmacariyaṃ

          aladdhā yobbane dhanaṃ

          jiṇṇakoñcā va jhāyanti

          khīṇamacche va pallale.


   聖なる行もせず

   若い時に財(智慧)も得ず

   年老いた鷺の如く消尽する

   魚(善果)のなくなった沼で。(悟68)


            Those who have not practiced proper discipline

            who have not acquired (spiritual)wealth in youth

            perish like old herons worn out

            in a pond without fish(good rewards).


   

156.  acaritvā brahmacariyaṃ

          aladdhā yobbane dhanaṃ

          senti cāpātikhīṇā va

          purāṇāni anutthunaṃ.


                        Jarāvaggo ekādasamo


   聖なる行もせず

   若い時に財(智慧)も得ず

   遺棄された弓の如く

   昔の事どもを泣き悲しむ。(悟68)


      老い  第十一章


            Those who have not practiced proper discipline

            who have not acquired (spiritual)wealth in youth

            lie like bows thrown away

            bewailing the times past.
