                       第十章 暴力(杖)

                       Chapter X  Punishment


129.  sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa

          sabbe bhāyanti maccuno

          attānaṃ upamaṃ katvā

          na haneyya na ghātaye.


   すべてが杖罰に慄え

   すべてが死を怖れる

   我が身に引き比べて

   殺す勿れ、殺さしむる勿れ。


            All beings tremble at the rod

            all beings fear death

            likening others to oneself

            one should neither slay nor cause to slay.



130.  sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa

          sabbesa jīvitaṃ piyaṃ

          attānaṃ upamaṃ katvā

          na haneyya na ghātaye.


   すべてが杖罰に慄え

   すべてにとって生命は愛おしい

   我が身に引き比べて

   殺す勿れ、殺さしむる勿れ。(話17)


             All beings tremble at the rod

             to all beings life is dear

             likening others to oneself

            one should neither slay nor cause to slay.



131.  sukhakāmāni bhūtāni

          yo daṇḍena vihiṃsati

          attano sukham esāno

          pecca so na labhate sukhaṃ.


   生きとし生けるものは幸せを欲する

   それを杖で害する者は

   自身の幸せを求めても

   死後幸せは得られない。(話17)


            Living beings long for happiness

            whoever injures them with the rod

            longing himself for happiness

            will not obtain happiness after death.



132.  sukhakāmāni bhūtāni

          yo daṇḍena na hiṃsati

          attano sukham esāno

          pecca so labhate sukhaṃ.


   生きとし生けるものは幸せを欲する

   それを杖で害さない者は

   自身の幸せを求めて

   死後幸せは得る。


            Living beings long for happiness

            whoever does not injure them with the rod

            longing himself for happiness

            will obtain happiness after death.

133.  mā voca pharusaṃ kañci

          vuttaā paṭivadeyyu taṃ

          dukkhā hi sārambhakathā

          paṭidaṇḍā phuseyyu taṃ.


   誰にであれ麁悪な言葉を言う勿れ

   言われた人は汝に(その通り)言い返すだろう

   実に怒りを含んだ言葉は苦である

   仕返しが汝に降りかかるだろう。(話33)


            Speak not harshly to anyone

            those you address will answer you(in the same way)

            angry words bring trouble

            retaliation will come to you.



134.  sace neresi attānaṃ

          kaṃso upahato yathā

          esa patto si nibbānaṃ

          sārambho te na vijjati.


   もし自己が静寂であれば

   まるで壊れた鐘のように

   それが涅槃に達したのである

   汝に怒りの言葉はない。(話33)


            If you keep yourself as still

            as a broken gong

            it is that you have attained Nibbāna

            angry speech is not found in you.



135.  yathā daṇḍena gopālo

          gāvo pāceti gocaraṃ

          evaṃ jarā ca maccū ca

          āyuṃ pācenti pāṇinaṃ.


   牛飼いが杖でもって

   牛を牧場に駆り立てるように

   そのように老いと死は

   生けるものの寿命を駆り立てる。


            Just as with a stick a cowherd drives

            the cows to the pasture

            so aging and death

            drive the life of living beings.



136.  atha pāpāni kammāni

          karaṃ bālo na bujjhati

          sehi kammehi dummedho

          aggidaḍḍho va tappati.


   様々な悪を行なう時も

   愚者は気づかない

   愚鈍な者は自分の行ないに

   火に焼かれた如く苦しむ。(悟10)


            In committing wicked deeds

            the fool does not notice their wickedness

            by their own wicked deeds the stupid

            are consumed as if burnt with fire.


           

           

137.  yo daṇḍena adaṇḍesu

          appaduṭṭhesu dussati

          dasannam aññataraṃ ṭhānaṃ

          khippam eva nigacchati.


   杖をもって、杖持たぬ

   過誤のない者に怒る者は

  (次の)十のうちから殊に一つ(の罪業)を

   まさに速やかに受ける。


            One who uses violence upon unarmed people

            and offends against those without offense,

            to one of these ten states,

            will soon come.

138.  vedanaṃ pharusaṃ jāniṃ

          sarīrassa va bhedanaṃ

          garukaṃ vāpi ābādhaṃ

          cittakkhepaṃ va pāpuṇe.


   激しい苦痛と虚弱

   または身体の切断

   或は重病

   または心の錯乱に陥る。


            Cruel suffering and infirmity

            or injury of the body

            or severe sickness

            or loss of mind.



139. rājato va upasaggaṃ

         abbhakkhānaṃ va dāruṇaṃ

         parikkhayaṃ va ñātinaṃ

         bhogānaṃ va pabhaṅguṇaṃ.


   または王からの禍い

   または誹謗中傷

   または親族の絶滅

   または破産


            Or a misfortune proceeding from the king

            or a heavy accusation

            or extinction of relatives

            or insolvency.



140.  athav' assa agārāni

          aggī ḍahati pāvako

          kāyassa bhedā duppañño

          nirayaṃ so papajjati.


   或はまた家々を

   火によって焼かれ

   身の破壊により智慧なき

   彼は地獄に再生する。(悟178)


            Or else his houses

            lightning fire will burn

            upon dissolution of the body this ignorant man

            he will be reborn in hell.



141.  na naggacariyā na jaṭā na paṃkā

          nānāsakā thaṇḍilasāyikā vā

          rajo va jallaṃ ukkuṭikappadhānaṃ

          sodhenti maccaṃ avitiṇṇakaṃkhaṃ.


   裸の行も、結った髪も、泥(を塗って)も

   断食や地に臥しても

   塵、汚物まみれになっても、蹲踞に精出しても

   疑いの越えていない人間を浄化しない。


            Not nakedness, not matted hair, not mud,

            not fasting and lying on the ground,

            not rubbing with dust and filth

            purify a mortal who has not overcome doubt.



142.  alaṃkato ce pi samaṃ careyya

          santo danto niyato brahmacārī

          sabbesu bhūtesu nidhāya daṇḍaṃ

          so brāhmaṇo so samaṇo sa bhikkhu.


   たとえ身を荘厳に飾っても正しく行なえ

   寂として調御し断固たる梵行者は

   一切の生きとし生けるものを杖の下に置かない

   彼こそバラモンであり、沙門であり、比丘である。


            Even though richly adorned they should act righteously

            quiet, restrained, established people in the holy life

            never put all beings under the rod

            he be a brāhmaṇa, a samaṇa, a bhikkhu.



143.  hirīnisedho puriso

          koci lokasmi vijjati

          yo  nindaṃ apabodheti

          asso bhadro kasāmi va.


   恥を知って自己を制し

   この世のどこにいようか

   非難を気に留めない者が

   賢い馬が鞭を気に留めないように。


             So restrained by modesty

             Is there a man in the world

             that he wards off reproach

             as a well-bred horse the whip?


   

144.  asso yathā bhadro kasāniviṭṭho

          ātāpino saṃvegino bhavātha

          saddhāya sīlena ca viriyena ca

          samādhinā dhammavinicchayena ca

          sampannavijjācaraṇā patissatā

          pahassatha dukkham idaṃ anappakaṃ.


   鞭打たれた駿馬のように

   勢いよく努め励め

   信と戒と精励によって

   また精神統一と真理を見定めることによって

   明知と行いを完成し、思念を凝らせば、

   汝は少なからざる苦を除くであろう。


            Like a well-bred horse touched by the whip

            be strenuous and swift

            by faith, by rules, by effort

            and by mediation, by understanding of the Law

            possessing perfect knowledge and behavior,

                                                               by being mindful

            you would rid yourselves of this unlimited suffering.




145.  udakaṃ hi nayanti nettikā

          usukārā namayanti tejanaṃ

          dāruṃ namayanti tacchakā

          attānaṃ damayanti subbatā.


                          Daṇḍavaggo dasamo


  治水をする者は実に、水を引き

  矢を作る者は箭を曲げ

  大工は木材を矯め

  善き人は自己を整える。(悟24)

      

      暴力(杖) 第十章



         Ditch-diggers lead the water

         fletchers bend the shafts

         carpenters bend the wood

         the good control themselves.
